HEALTH LITERACY

There are so many factors that go into living a healthy life. Knowing how to talk about your health is one of them.

Impact Area: Health Literacy

Health Literacy affects an individual’s healthcare experience on many levels—at the doctor’s office, at the pharmacy, with insurers, and even in discussing health matters with loved ones. Health literacy is key to working through the healthcare system – understanding instructions from medical professionals, self-care, and the ability to manage disease. Lower health literacy skills lead to increased chronic conditions and hospitalizations, underutilization of preventative care and overall poor health. Clients and patients will often hide their lack of understanding due to the stigmas of low health literacy, contributing to poor health outcomes.
