FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION

Children can’t learn if all they can think about is how hungry they are.

Impact Area: Food Security & Nutrition

Common sense tells us that the health and wellness of our community hinges on making sure everyone has access to nutritious meals. It’s not just about filling hungry stomachs. Research (and teachers!) show that hungry children have a harder time learning at school and are at higher risk for health problems now and later in life. Not having enough to eat literally puts them behind at school and ultimately, behind in life.

Hunger is a reality in many families for one simple reason: some parents in low-income households have never learned how to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals, especially on a tight budget. That’s why we’re proud to work with Cooking Matters, a program of Share Our Strength. It helps families overcome hunger by learning how to put healthy, affordable meals on the table.

Service Work Opportunity:

As a Cooking Matters volunteer, you can help fight hunger in your community by teaching basic nutrition, leading tours in grocery stores to identify healthy but inexpensive ingredients, and even show people how to cook a meal from start to finish.
