CHILDHOOD LITERACY

Early readers are better students, ready for learning and life.

Impact Area: Childhood Literacy

Early childhood literacy is a true building block for the rest of a child’s success in life. Knowing how to read at a young age and being ready and excited about learning is crucial to all children. And it is especially important for children who may have other things working against them including poverty and language barriers.

Because childhood literacy can affect education and career opportunities, income and overall health later in life, helping kids get a strong start is one of the best gifts you can ever give. In Colorado, over 55 percent of 4th graders fall below expectations in English Language Arts and Literacy, and for lower income students, the number nears  72 percent.  We’re proud that Boomers Leading Change volunteers  work with groups like Reading Partners to give students the best chance at a successful and healthy life.

Service Work Opportunity:

At Reading Partners, Boomers and other volunteers serve in low-income schools to help kids master basic reading skills and narrow or close achievement gaps. One-on-one tutoring empowers students to succeed while simultaneously empowering volunteers to make a lasting difference through individualized personal attention to each student.  Last year Reading Partners volunteers worked with 500 students.
